Wondering how to check coolant levels on your own? At Muller Honda Pre-Owned, we have a helpful guide to teach you just what to look for. So, what is coolant? Coolant is a fluid that transfers heat and regulates the temperature of the engine block and parts. Engine coolant is crucial to your vehicle, no matter if new or a pre-owned model. This fluid contains additives to ensure it stays below 32 degrees F, but also doesn’t evaporate above 212 degrees F. When the time comes to check coolant levels in your vehicle, trust Muller Honda Pre-Owned to show you how.
You don’t have to open the radiator cap to check the level. Instead, check the markings on the side of the reservoir. If the liquid reaches the “full” marking line, you’re good to go. If it doesn’t, remove the radiator cap and add coolant or a 50/50 mix of coolant/water. Read the bottle to see if it’s premixed. It’s also a good idea to also inspect the hoses connected to the radiator for any leaks or damage. Not sure where to look? Check your owner’s manual for more specific directions or bring your model into our service center near Arlington Heights for some assistance.
Note: If you’re adding more liquid to the cooling system, be sure the engine has cooled. Also, don’t attempt to open the radiator cap while the engine is hot.
Since coolant is thinner than oil and thicker than water, it can be easy to spot when it appears to be sludgy-looking. If you notice this consistency, schedule a service appointment ASAP. This could be a sign that the vehicle has an internal gasket leak. You’ll still be able to drive the car, but the leaking gasket will drain the coolant pretty quickly. This means the engine is at risk of overheating and being severely damaged.
It’s a good idea to keep tabs on your vehicle’s cooling system every three to six months as coolant levels can deplete over time. Typically the liquid is blue, green, yellow, or red. If you notice it’s brown or even colorless, you’ll want to flush the system and replace the fluid.
